BOX-E – Celebrating being us!

I am a big fan of celebrating; whether there is a specific reason or just celebrating surviving life that week (it can be tricky sometimes!) The chance to get together with fab friends, eat delicious food and toast with a glass of fizz is one of my favourite things in life.

If you are also looking for something that little bit special, BOX-E in Wapping Wharf is the place to go. Upstairs in Cargo 1, this littleย container is the home of something beautiful. Husband and wife, Elliottย and Tess, have taken years of experience in restaurants and turned their dreams into something pretty fantastic in a small space. Just 14 covers means you can see the kitchen in action – with Elliott creating his seasonal, modern, British masterpieces in front of your eyes.

I increasingly fell in love with BOX-E the more we found out about how much care and attention goes into each and every part of the experience. The gorgeous plates: made from an independent potter. The gin: from local gin distillery, Psychopomp. They know their suppliers and have obviously worked really hard to make the restaurant perfect.

We began our eve with a toastย of rhubarb fizz (the creation process I had seen on Instagram earlier that day and craved it all day), while we worked our way through bread with gorgeous whipped butter. Admittedly, we had a few rounds of the bread – that butter was just so good!

Their menu is simple: one meat, vegetarian and fish option for starters and mains. I couldn’t resist the gin cured salmon to start, particularly when we got to smell all the delicious botanicals that go in to the Psychopomp gin used in this lovely light and fresh dish. Fennel and salmon is a winning combo! The sprouting broccoli and peanut vegetarian option was the other popular choice of the table.

I chose the roasted quail with berlotti beans and radicchio. Super flavoursome, if not a little tricky to ensure you got all the meat of the dainty little bones. A little uncouth, but I had to go in for the nibbling from the bone technique here. The star main here was definitely the lemon sole. Cooked to perfection with a crisp skin and served with fregola – a type of pasta from Sardinia in small ball shape. The little taster I snuck from my friend was scrumptious.

Make sure you leave room for dessert, if only to try one of their delicious dessert wines to finish your meal. Their vanilla panna cotta with Yorkshire rhubarb seems to have become pretty infamous amongst Bristol foodies and my fellow diners all opted for this perfect wobbly dish. I however, could not resist the Westlake “Rachel” with apple chutney and celery salt crackers. Rachel cheese is one of my all time favourites – and it gave me the opportunity to try a smooth glass of port from the same vineyard as the scrumptious Vinho Verde we had sipped with our mains. The best thing about this – the ratios. Look at that decent size chunk of cheese – no need to scrimp at all on the cheese to cracker combo. ๐Ÿ™‚
