Beautiful: The Carole King Musical tells the inspiring story of Carole King, from an ambitious 16 year old girl pitching her first song, to one of the most successful solo acts and songwriters in popular music.
It provides a wonderful behind-the-scenes insight into the music scene of the 1960s. You watch some of the most well known pop songs being created at the piano, either from the songwriting team of Carole and her husband Gerry Goffin, or fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann. Switch to the next moment of glitzy performances from the artists that made a lot of the songs famous!
I went in to Beautiful honestly (and embarrassingly) thinking I did not know much about Carole King’s music. Turns out I know and love them ALL! Highlights?
- (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman – who doesn’t sing this in the shower?
- Some kind of Wonderful and Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow – made me immediately want to go home and rewatch Dirty Dancing (for approximately the 50th time)
- The Locomotion!!! I grew up making up dances to this!
Despite the more troubling points of Carole’s life – particularly dealing with the break up of her marriage and consequently her songwriting partnership – the overall feeling of the musical is heartwarming and uplifting. It was particularly sweet to watch the guy in front of me chuckle away with joy through most of the show!
